The BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) advises that the overall risk to Canadians from COVID-19 is low, and the best protection is to take the same precautions as you would during cold and flu season: wash your hands often with soap and water; cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing; avoid others who are unwell; and stay home when you are sick.

Additional Information on COVID-19:

What is coronavirus?

● Coronavirus is a new respiratory disease that was first detected in China and has now spread world-wide. The specific disease has been named Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

How is the COVID-19 Spread?

● The virus spreads from person to person via respiratory droplets among those in close contact. Close contact includes being within 6 feet of an individual for a prolonged period of time or having direct contact with infectious secretions.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

● The following symptoms appear within 2-14 days after exposure:

   ○ Fever

   ○ Cough

   ○ Shortness of breath

● The majority of patients display mild symptoms. However, 16% of infected individuals display serious illness. Older adults and individuals with comorbidities are at the most risk for serious illness.

What to do if you suspect that someone has COVID-19?

● The individual should wear a face mask.

● If the individual shows mild symptoms of COVID-19, they should isolate themselves at home for 14 days and contact a medical provider.

● If the illness worsens, the individual should be seen by a medical physician.

How to prevent the spread of COVID-19?

No vaccine exists for the virus. The best way to avoid contracting COVID-19 is to avoid exposure to the virus.

● Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

● Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

● Cover your cough and sneeze into a tissue, then dispose of the tissue. Wash your hands with soap and water afterward.

● Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using clorox wipes or another household cleaner.

● Face masks should be used by individuals that show symptoms of COVID-19. Face masks are not recommended for people that are well.

● Wash your hands with soap and water for a minimum of 20-30 seconds after using the restroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose or sneezing.
